For those who missed it the question posed was: “Americanfootballers wear protective clothing and apparatus. Should it also be made compulsory forschool rugby players to wear protective padding and headgear?”In asking this question we are making certain assumptions: Firstly that the demands of rugby are similar to those of NFL. Secondly that the protective gear used in rugby will have similar benefits to the padding and headgear used by American footballers. Although a case may be made for drawing comparisons between the 2 codes in so far asthey are both collision sports that may result in injury to the head neck trunk andvarious parts of all limbs I would argue that that is where the comparison ends. Anyone who has picked up an NFL helmet will notice that it is firstly far sturdier thanany rugby headgear and secondly that it has a grid to protect the face. Clearly this isgoing to offer more head and facial protection than the rugby union equivalent… For those who missed it the question posed was: “Americanfootballers wear protective clothing and apparatus.
