Sure the Boks have won the Tri-Nations title in between – on two occasions – but that competition doesn’t involve 14 weeks of the hardest rugby you’ll encounter anywhere on the planet. It is the first time South Africa is hosting the final and also the first time two local sides are competing for the southern hemisphere’s most sought-after franchise trophy.

The 22-year-old Leonard made his provincial debut in 2005 and his first Chiefs start this year. While Highlanders number nine Jimmy Cowan could regard himself as one of the unluckiest of last year’s All Blacks to miss the cut few will argue with the coach’s explanation of why Leonard beat of the challenge. “Brendon [Leonard] has been the best attacking scrum-half in the Super 14 this season and has forced his way into the side based on form” said Henry.
