The Rugby Family Jewels
League Unlimited – May 19, 2007
Earlier this month Clinton Schifcofske referred to the state of Queensland Rugby Union as being \”unacceptable and downright disgusting. \”The former Queensland rugby league full back and now Queensland rugby union back was referring to South Africa\’s Bulls 92-3 massacre of the Queensland Reds in the elite Super 14 series. As far as annual sporting events go the Super 14 is held aloft as the jewel in rugby union\’s crown. But there is no denying that a gulf exists in what is undoubtedly a lopsided contest.

Just think of the context of this clash. The sober-in-a-brewery administrators the back-of-an-envelope scheduling the pin-striped power-struggle between umpteen factions of pen-pushers. And now the rancid cherry on the top of this sludge a new England strip that would reduce the world’s most ostentatious jockey to sartorial tears. Have we not been humiliated enough? bviously not.

Millar optimistic as Premier clubs and RFU close on £8m elite deal
guardian.co.uk – May 19, 2007
European Rugby Cup Ltd the organisers of the Heineken Cup had hoped an agreement would have been reached yesterday in time for it to make a celebratory announcement to coincide with tomorrow’s final at Twickenham but the Rugby Football Union and Premier Rugby still have a number of issues to resolve. ne of them is the composition and powers of a Professional Game Board which would take the place of the ineffective England Rugby Ltd a body which has been unable to make any significant decisions since it was set up in 2001 because the clubs and the RFU each provide 50% of the board with no casting vote for the chairman. There is a determination on both sides to ensure that all contentious issues are addressed and that there are none of the ambiguities and loopholes which handicapped the long-form agreement the two sides signed six years ago. Agreement has been reached in principle on the RFU paying the club salaries in full of the 32-strong elite squad for less than the £250000 each that Premier Rugby initially demanded. The RFU has agreed to pay a global sum directly to Premier Rugby for the 32 rather than deal with clubs individually and Tuesday’s meeting will see ways discussed to generate the revenue needed to fund a deal which will cost the RFU some £8m a year… There is a determination on both sides to ensure that all contentious issues are addressed and that there are none of the ambiguities and loopholes which handicapped the long-form agreement the two sides signed six years ago. Agreement has been reached in principle on the RFU paying the club salaries in full of the 32-strong elite squad for less than the £250000 each that Premier Rugby initially demanded. The RFU has agreed to pay a global sum directly to Premier Rugby for the 32 rather than deal with clubs individually and Tuesday’s meeting will see ways discussed to generate the revenue needed to fund a deal which will cost the RFU some £8m a year. A fourth November international is an option along with an annual May meeting with the Barbarians while the clubs want the right to arrange a World XV fixture every year. ERC has been informed of developments but left in no doubt by the RFU that it will not be rushed into an agreement. Tuesday’s talks will be followed that night by a meeting of the Premiership owners while the union’s management board will gather the following morning so there can be no announcement of a deal before Wednesday and it is likely that negotiations will go on into the following week. The French clubs who pulled out of the Heineken Cup last month have said they will only return if the RFU and Premier Rugby reach an agreement and the chairman of the International Rugby Board Syd Millar who brokered peace talks said last night: “Genuine dialogue between the RFU and Premier Rugby Limited is under way and I believe the future of the Heineken Cup will be secured.
