Injuries paternity leave blooding new internationals and the need to create depth have resulted in 12 changes to the side that thrashed France a week ago. White a regular partner to controversy in off-the-field affairs has hogged the sports spotlight this week first with allegations around his involvement in an altercation with a tabloid journalist and the pressman’s later assault in a bar’s toilet. Then the Bok coach was skipping on hot coals as SA Rugby Union bosses tried to get him to call off a meeting with President Thabo Mbeki where apparently the Luke Watson selection saga was due to be discussed. As we reported yesterday White was cleared of any misconduct charges relating to the reporter-bashing incident and was asked not to continue with the Mbeki meeting. This newspaper has been Saru’s kindest critic but in this instance it is correct in trying to dissuade White from having his sit-down with the president. It is hard to imagine what useful role Mbeki could play if he were to meet with White tomorrow as scheduled. By organising this meeting White has opened a door which will discomfort those who advocate that politicians should keep an arm’s distance from the running of sport… It would only serve to weaken White’s hand and simply highlights his political isolation within rugby at the moment. Telling tales to the president about his nasty colleagues won’t help him. We would guess that if the Rugby World Cup were not months away White would no longer be sitting on the coach’s bench. White should heed the message coming from rugby’s headquarters. If he presses ahead with the meeting he may discover that he has crossed a bridge too far. The likes of Saru vice-president Mike Stofile and Hoskins are not men to be trifled with. They would not entertain a public slap in the face and the Mbeki meeting would be exactly that.
