For the past two or three years the Sydney media have called for Gregan to be dumped from the Wallabies. They felt he had lost his punch. That he crabbed across the field too much was a passer but never a runner and as a result didn’t threaten the defence. The criticism was often valid but no one was able to provide the name of the bloke who would play halfback for Australia ahead of Gregan.

The FRU says tests were conducted by the Fiji Sports Drug Agency and all samples returned a negative result. FRU chief executive Timoci Tavanavanua says he hopes this puts to an end the baseless speculation in the media of the use of drugs within the national team managementHe says he hopes those media that helped spread this grog-bowl gossip will have the decency to come clean and apologise. Cranes technical team was wary of players getting injured barely two weeks before the CAR Africa Cup semi-final against Kenya. The rugby union technical committee ruled that the players play for their clubs since there are indications that Confederation of African Rugby (CAR) is likely to postpone the semi-finals and final scheduled for August 6-12. Cup semi-finalists uganda telecom Kobs G4S Pirates Hima Impis and MTN Heathens had complained about the move to rest national team players. They had instead requested the committee to postpone the semi-finals.

sportsdigitalcontent. Latham was on Tuesday named on the Wallaby bench for Saturday’s Tri-Nations and Bledisloe Cup finale against the All Blacks at Eden Park despite not having played a top-level match in 2007 after ripping his anterior cruciate ligament in pre-season training with the Queensland Reds. Horan – who suffered a serious knee injury in 1994 before going on to play a bit-part role at the 1995 RWC – told the Daily Telegraph: “Latho is the most courageous player we have at the moment but I’m thinking about his build-up to the World Cup and his longevity in the game. “It’s an unfair call on Chris. People who understand knee reconstructions will know it’s amazing he’s already playing so soon.

Injury hampered him in 1987 but four years later it was his tournament. The former sawmill worker plundered six tries in 1991 including one beauty in the semi-final win over New Zealand – a match in which he famously set up Tim Horan for another touchdown with a magnificent over-the-shoulder pass. Ahead of the final he goaded England into changing their tactics and the Aussies claimed a narrow win thanks in no small part to what appeared a deliberate knock-on by ‘Campo’ as England seemed certain to score in the corner. He was past his best by 1995 but his legacy was already secure.

Both goals were achieved – and global domination duly accomplished. England’s critical pool game was against South Africa in Perth and a hard-fought success effectively meant they avoided the All Blacks and Australia until much later in the tournament. Wales Ireland and Scotland also progressed. Wales then gave England a monumental quarter-final fright in Brisbane leading impressively at half-time before substitute Mike Catt inspired a fightback and subsequent 28-17 win while the other three games also went to form with New Zealand beating South Africa Australia seeing off Scotland and France knocking out Ireland.
