Until Saturday night the rugby week had been a mess of contradictions ridiculous statements and rants. You had Springboks coach Jake White making a complete about-turn over his decision to bring his B-team to Australia and New Zealand. ne minute he uses fighting words towards those who criticised him for mocking the SANZAR agreement; the next he is apologising to the masses. You had South Africans bleating about Australians being a bunch of racists because the Wallabies had apparently shown scant interest in raising the Mandela Trophy above their heads following the Sydney Test win. And over in K Corral territory you had Western Force officials making El Presidente State of the Union addresses where they moaned about the Herald pursuing them on player recruitment issues because this newspaper was supposedly jealous of the team’s on-field success… With the evening came the reminder that the 2007 World Cup is heading to the most delightful of countries – where the rugby won’t be the be-all and end-all but just a good excuse to immerse yourself in everything French. And where every Australian will discover that the most crucial French sentence you need to know off by heart is: “Non Anglais; Australie” – meaning “We’re not English; we’re Australian”. As the Bastille Ball confirmed if you can get to the World Cup in France – go! It may even restore your faith in everything rugby.
