Scottish Rugby Union chief executive McKie and Edinburgh owner Carruthers have been at loggerheads over the capital club’s claim they are owed a six-figure sum by the national governing body in Magners League and Heineken Cup fees. The relationship between the two organisations hit rock bottom when Edinburgh resigned their associate membership of the SRU on Monday. However the first steps towards some degree of reconciliation are beginning to emerge. Neither side is ready to back down but mediation is on the cards after Edinburgh formally offered to go to arbitration with the SRU to bring an end to the damaging row.

The recent deaths of Joey Sadlerand Keith Gudsell should not pass without a significant mention. They are two men who came from a different age of rugby in NewZealand an age when things were so very different to the luxuriesof today. The story first of Keith Gudsell. For a start he was selectedfor the national team from the province of Wanganui which was rarein those days but sadly seems even more unlikely to ever happen intoday’s glamorous world of big-city franchises. More significantlythe bustling second five-eighths then went on to play for twocountries in just three years. Such an experience was not uniquethen but in his time Gudsell was a rarity… The most recent All Blacks to have a close associationwith Australian rugby (and rugby league) were Steve Devine and BradThorn. Halfback Devine had been an Australian Under-21 player and asevens international as well. Thorn had been a rugby league testplayer. The two men were significant parts of the All Blacks teamat the 2003 Rugby World Cup in Australia. All of the above makes the passing of Keith Gudsell worthmentioning. He was a significant player in his time in twocountries. The ‘pocket battleship’ Joey Sadler is unique for entirely different reasons.

Australia ready for Asia road showThursday 12th July 2007As if there was not enough Test rugby already the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) are proposing a one-off Test against the All Blacks at the end of 2008 in Hong Kong to extend their reach into Asia. The game will be billed as a Test match – but will not count towards either the Tri-Nations or the Bledisloe Cup. With an official accord with Japan already and China considered to be a sleeping giant of world rugby the game offers a lucrative market for merchandising and branding. The ARU also believe the presence of such a game in Hong Kong will spark more of an interest in China and boost the development of the game. The game was originally scheduled to be played in China but the ARU and NZRU opted to change the location to Hong Kong due to the popularity of the sport there.
