The ‘seven figure’ deal is Etihad’s first major sporting sponsorship deal in the UK and the biggest in Harlequins’ history. It will see the airline’s logo emblazoned on Harlequins’ famous quartered shirt as well as on the Twickenham Stoop stadium in south west London. The deal was announced today (Monday) at a press conference held at the Twickenham Stoop which was attended by James Hogan Etihad Airways’ chief executive Mark Evans Harlequins’ chief executive and Dean Richards Harlequins’ director of rugby. James Hogan said: “This new partnership with Harlequins will provide Etihad Airways with an ideal international platform to connect with our customers in the UK and around the world.

Uncertainty clouds new rugby competition

The inaugural ARC starts on August 10 and features eight newlycreated franchises – three from Sydney and one each from Brisbanethe Gold Coast Canberra Melbourne and Perth. The competition has already faced fierce opposition fromestablished clubs including Halangahu’s Sydney University whichwon a third straight Sydney premiership on Saturday. “It’s hard to commit yourself fully when you look at the peopleup at the ARU (Australia Rugby Union) who seem to be saying if thisdoesn’t work financially it’s not going to last more than a year”Halangahu told Sydney radio station 2KY. “So it’s hard for us to be fully committed and it’s hard for meto say I can’t wait to play for the Sydney Fleet when you don’tknow if the Sydney Fleet will be around after this year.

Rugby: Kenya to take on Uganda next month in Nairobi

The match was Monday boosted with a sponsorship to the tune of 3 million Kenya shillings from East Africa breweries limited under their Tusker Sports banner. The Kenya rugby football Union chairman Richard mwela who received the cheque from the Tusker brand manager Kendi Kilonzo said the package would be used to cater for the travel and accomodation costs of the Ugandan team as well as logistics. The Kenya 15 a side were beaten 29-9 by the Ugandans in the first leg in Kampala but they have vowed to overturn the table in Nairobi. Meanwhile the Kenyan Coach Michael ‘Tank' tieno has hinted that there could be three changes when the team is named later in the week especially after one of the forwards George Mbaye was injured in the Kenya Cup league match against Nakuru on Saturday.
