The play proved pivotal in Canada’s devastating 29-16 loss to the quick and elusive Fijians that eliminated any hope of the Canucks reaching the quarter-finals. The loss was doubly costly because Fiji will now likely finish third in Pool B behind Australia and Wales guaranteeing itself a berth in the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand.

But Wallabies coach John Connolly remains confident his playmaker will still play a part should his side advance to a likely semi-final showdown with New Zealand. “Stephen will be available for a semi-final and maybe a quarter-final if we get there” Connolly said. “There was just a bit of loose material in there (Larkham’s knee) a bit of muck and they cleaned that out.

The south has started with a roar the north with a whimper Georgia came within a hair’s breadth of pulling off the upset of the century and naturally there’s been injuries suspensions and the vagaries of form for us all to chew over. There’s a long way to go yet and it’s fair to say the tournament is yet to really spring to life with a surfeit of quality matches between genuine contenders. (Actually that’s probably because there is a surfeit of genuine contenders. ) Still there’s been enough to enthuse over for me to trot out an early edition of my top 10 World Cup moments so far.

Thomas 33 came off after 22 minutes of his side’s 32-20 defeat to Australia following a clash with Wallabies full-back Chris Latham. Results of a scan on Thomas’ damaged rib cartilage are not yet available but the veteran centre who has already suggested the tournament could see the end of his international career is not hopeful. “I’ve had a similar injury before. My gut feeling is that I’m out for six weeks” Thomas told the Daily Star.

Having stuck stoicly to his first choice team for the previous two matches ‘Sullivan surprised everyone by leaving out one of his most senior players. He also brought in hooker Jerry Flannery for the injured Rory Best who fractured and dislocated his thumb in last Saturday’s win over Georgia while Andrew Trimble comes back into the team to replace Denis Hickie on the wing. Stringer has been left out of the 22 altogether with Isaac Boss preferred as replacement scrum-half on the bench. “It’s a tough one because Peter has been a stalwart of the team but his form lately hasn’t been his best.
