“There’s a danger the game is becoming too sanitised” Jones said prior to naming his team to face England in Nantes tomorrow. “It’s getting to the point where I’d think about telling my son to go play rugby league. It’s getting to the point where I might well have opted to play rugby league myself. Jones’ beef is with Rugby World Cup disciplinary officers. Already there have been several citings for dangerous tackles. The Pacific Island sides thrive on aggressive defence pride themselves on hitting hard. There are times when the fine line is breached.

A question as innocent as “Is Jonny still not playing?” can spell instant doom for all but the most robust relationships. But while Rugby World Cup widows can do their best to shut off Rugby Mummies (RMs to those in the know) cannot afford to take their eye off the ball for a moment. I have been a member of this club for some years now. We are the women who know that a “scrum down” isn’t a bizarre new pre-tan exfoliation process and that a “throw in” isn’t something you do with the kitchen towel.
