If you wanted money you couldn't play and that generally limited the game to those who had money. Such an attitude explains why soccer not rugby became the world game. It almost killed rugby in Australia but made it appealing to snobs wherever it is played. The hypocrisy also helped preserve some of rugby's more attractive characteristics which linger on even in the era of professionalism and make a refreshing change from soccer.
