Rugby Union: Japan and Canada draw 12-12; Romania narrowly beats…
International Herald Tribune – Sep 25, 2007
Not losing can be enough. After Shotaro nishi booted a conversion with the last kick of the match Tuesday to earn Japan a rare World Cup draw 12-12 against Canada it was clear which team was happier. n a night when both games matched teams that had yet to win at this World Cup only one of the four managed a precious victory – Romania which beat Portugal 14-10 in Toulouse. Yet Japan could take satisfaction from only the second-ever World Cup match to finish in a draw – and the first since 1995. It goes home having ended its streak of 13 straight World Cup losses. Canada has one more game.

Professor Duncan Tanner from Bangor University carried out a study to coincide with this year’s Rugby World Cup tournament. He found more men in Wales were likely to be playing football and golf than having a game of rugby. But he did find that people saw rugby as part of being Welsh. “n a typical Saturday afternoon in winter you’d find more Welshmen out walking playing football and even more playing golf than you’d find playing rugby” says Prof Tanner in his paper ‘”Are the Welsh obsessed with rugby?’”"Three times as many people turn up to watch Cardiff play football than go to watch Newport Gwent Dragons play rugby.

“Francois Steyn has been cited in connection with an allegation of biting involving the Tonga wing Joseph Vaka” organisers said in a statement. The player and South African team management have been informed and must attend a hearing yet to be convened. If Steyn is found guilty of the offence it will almost certainly end his involvement in the World Cup as the International Rugby Board’s recommended sentence for biting ranges from six months to three years.

The prop has been suspended for the last two matches after breaking the rules in the first game of the tournament against America.
