World Cup 2007 was rugby’s perfect platform

8 French television enjoyed record viewing figures with 20 million watching the semi-final against England and well over 40 per cent of them were women. Why does the female population of this country not engage in the same way with the sport? 9 Who was the genius who decided to reinvent the forward pass law for this World Cup? It meant the players knew where they stood and there was a much more consistent and uniform approach to refereeing. 10 Who was the genius who decided to waive the forward pass law when France played the All Blacks? 11 Why do so many grown men cry at their national anthems before rugby internationals when they don’t in football? 12 Why do so many women go weak at the knees at the sight of Sebastien Chabal? 13 Why is it possible to travel anywhere on the metro in Paris (when it’s working) for £1 when it costs £4 to go one stop on the Tube in London? 14 How is it possible for anyone at this World Cup to suggest that reducing the number of sides for the next one from 20 to 16 is a good idea? 15 Will the Argentine players’ practice of kissing each other when substitutions are made catch on over here? Fifteen seemed an appropriate numbers of questions although there are many more but they are for another time. Law changes must come up for discussion as defences nullify most attacking options these days and the issue of what’s to be done with Argentina Tonga Georgia and the rest has been done to death elsewhere. It is absolutely essential however that the momentum that’s been built up for the international game as a whole over the past six weeks is not allowed to evaporate as the months pass and self-interest among the individual major unions replaces the overall feel-good factor from France. That’s the serious stuff. For all the disappointment of the final from an English perspective the over-riding word to describe this World Cup has been ‘fun’.
