New Zealand Police recruitment marketing manager James Whitaker said yesterday police would spend around $40000 a year for the next three years sponsoring the Auckland secondary schools’ first 15 competition involving 28 teams. “We see this sponsorship as a great vehicle to promote the NZ Police as a career option to a large number of school leavers. “We need people who are fit and able to think on their feet and a lot of these people play rugby. ” National’s police spokesman Chester Borrows said the money could be better spent in other areas to help turn lives around.
GAA eyeing up rugby league referees

The GAA are now exploring the possibility of using neutral referees in an effort to re-instate the matches and have approached the Rugby Football League with the idea. RFL match officials director Stuart Cummings who was planning to visit the GAA as a part of a fact-finding mission admits: ‘It would be interesting. ‘We will be willing to look at any proposals – but as yet no discussions have taken place. ‘GAA president Nickey Brennan met Australia Football League chief executive Andrew Demetriou in Paris today for exploratory talks on a re-instatement of the series.
