ne minute you are the darling of the nation and everybody loves you. The next minute you are public enemy No1 and everybody is waiting to kick you when you are down. It’s probably a much harder job in a country that is as passionate about rugby as New Zealand. The introduction of the Rugby World Cup has had a lot to do with the way we perceive coaches and judge whether they have been successful or not.

Three days after the departure of coach Mark McCall Ulster made a strong start and tries by Kieron Dawson and Simon Danielli had them 17-9 up at half-time. But they could not maintain their form and poor tackling let Arnaud Tchougong and Jean-Francois Coux in for tries. Ulster clung on for a losers’ bonus point but are still bottom of the pool. The Irish province under the guidance of acting coach Steve Williams had a great opening 30 minutes with those converted tries.

In yet another shock to rock South African rugby former Spears chief executive Tony McKeever wrote to the Competition Commission complaining that a cartel of five provinces was behind the decision to block the Spears’ introduction into the tournaments. The commission’s head of enforcement Thulani Kunene confirmed yesterday that the matter was under investigation. “I have instructed a senior investigator to look into it and will check on his progress” he told the Daily Dispatch. There are other reasons athletes play rugby and it has nothing to do with money or fame. Murray State senior Cody Willis plays for and is devoted to the Murray State Rugby team.
