Head coach Graham Henry and his assistants Steve Hansen and Wayne Smith have publicly maintained a diplomatic silence about Barnes’ performance in the World Cup quarter-final in which hot favourites New Zealand lost to France 18-20. But in a review of the performance held behind closed doors at the rugby union headquarters the coaches produced video evidence documenting Barnes’ errors according to the New Zealand Herald. The inexperienced English official failed to award a single penalty against France in the second half. However the video highlighted 17 second-half errors by Barnes and his touch judges which all related to French indiscretions that were missed by the officials the Herald said.

In his first season in charge of Scotland he guided his team to memorable home wins over France and England while their recent Test victory against Ireland Test completed his personal full house of wins against Six Nations sides. In the World Cup Scotland gained a comfortable pass mark missing out on a place in the last four by the frustratingly narrow margin of their 19-13 quarter-final defeat by Argentina. Small wonder that the Scottish Rugby Union should want to retain his services. Hadden’s self-effacing style can be counted among the reasons why his name is rarely connected to vacancies at leading club sides – Edinburgh’s modest record when he was in charge must also be a factor – but he is generally seen as a good fit for Scotland. As mild as his manner may be it is worth remembering that Scotland have added an extra physical dimension during his time in charge. n the face of it SRU chief executive Gordon McKie could hardly have volunteered a more ringing endorsement of Hadden’s qualities than the one he offered the other day. “We want Frank to stay as national coach and I will be telling him that personally” McKie said when asked about Hadden’s contract situation.
