‘Saru could pay R30m if found guilty’
Independent nline – Nov 21, 2007
Former Spears chief executive Tony McKeever has brought the complaint against SA Rugby alleging that Saru and the five major unions conspired to have the Spears unlawfully excluded from the 2006 Currie Cup competition as well as the 2007 and 2008 Super 14. Nevertheless if found guilty SA Rugby face up to R30-million in penalties with the five major unions also potentially liable for having to pay damages. This would have devastating consequences on SA Rugby’s finances. In the last financial year SA Rugby performed poorly barely breaking even with reserves dropping to R18-million from R45-million just four years ago when former managing director Rian berholzer resigned. In the same period their administration budget has tripled from R30-million per annum to R80-million. SA Rugby have so far been unable to explain the huge increase in expenditure although it is believed massive payments to all three presidents as well as a top heavy committee structure is an aggravating factor.
