Centenary celebrations fall flat for NZ rugby league
stuff.co.nz – Dec 27, 2007
A disastrous Kiwi campaign under new coach Gary Kemble was followed by news that the New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL) expects to make a $1. 25 million loss for the year. Kemble succeeded Brian McClennan as test coach but his first assignment ended in a record 58-0 thrashing at the hands of Australia in ctober. The centenary tour of Britain and France proved little better for the Kiwis with a 3-0 whitewash at the hands of the Lions followed by a narrow win over the French in Paris.

“It comes back occasionally but you’ve got to be philosophical about it” the Crusaders flank told the Press on Thursday. Although it still hurt at times McCaw said he had finally accepted the defeat and that it was the ability to get over it and move on that was critical. The All Black captain still has a considerable amount of responsibility on his shoulders and he understands that all too well. Apart from the fact that he is likely to lead another Tri-Nations campaign under Graham Henry’s mentorship he will also hope to give Crusaders coach Robbie Deans the ideal send-off in his final season with the Canterbury-based Super 14 franchise.

Guardian Unlimited – Dec 27, 2007
So it was yesterday as a scrappy disjointed game ended in a flurry of punches with the Blues’ second-row Paul Tito and the Newport-Gwent Dragons’ No8 Joe Bearman being sent off. Their dismissals came on the advice of a touch judge following two fights which spread to join each other but three other forwards played equally prominent roles in an exchange which proved far more entertaining than the previous 80 minutes of a game settled by a contentious try. The Blues who are the most improved of the Welsh regions this season were drawn into a scrap by the Dragons who had chosen to rest the majority of their first-choice side before two home matches in a week. Even when Cardiff had a two-man advantage for a 14-minute spell at the end of the first half they struggled to string more than two passes together and continued to seek contact.
