Guardian Unlimited – Dec 20, 2007
The prospect of Shaun Edwards trotting off to assist Wales is causing considerable soul-searching within the Rugby Football Union and a grim day on the disciplinary and injury front also contributed to a noticeably defensive mood. A sparse statement confirming the open secret of Ashton’s new contract unsurprisingly made no mention of Edwards’ reluctance to accept a modest role coaching the second-string England Saxons team in favour of rejoining his old Wasps pal Warren Gatland in Cardiff on a part-time basis. He is due to give his final answer today but there is a sense the RFU has offered him too little too late. Combined with news that lly Barkley will appear in court on New Year’s Eve to answer an assault charge a brace of suspensions for the captain Phil Vickery and his fellow World Cup squad prop Perry Freshwater and a nasty throat injury to Shaun Perry there is a distinct lack of seasonal cheer in the air.
Competition is hotting up in Scottish rugby
The Herald – Dec 20, 2007
getElementById(theDiv); theDiv. First played for 135 years ago one of the world’s oldest sporting rivalries – comfortably pre-dating the first meeting of football’s ld Firm – again has an added edge with the city sides now Scottish rugby’s only full-time professional teams. The time is right to dust off the old claret jug and put it up for grabs again. Admittedly dwellers in Caledonia – the old rugby district where Frank Hadden the national coach and Jason White the Scotland captain learned their trade – may be slightly amused that the men asked to pull on 1872 garb yesterday to promote the match as rival captains Ally Hogg and Al Kellock earned their contracts playing for Stirling County. However it has always been aptthat if Scottish rugby can onlyafford two properly resourced professional teams then theyshould be in the big cities.
