Amateur does a professional job
Fiji Times – Dec 25, 2007
“I am requesting the FRU to include Bolabiu on its payroll and attach him to the High Performance Unit” he said. “What is there to stop the FRU from breaking new ground and employing Bolabiu as Fiji’s first professional referee” said Vuki. “With let us say a $12000 salary I am pretty sure that part of the refereeing grant from the IRB to the FRU for referees can be utilised to accommodate his salary. ”Vuki said he was concerned about Bolabiu’s financial welfare in the long-term as he had his mother and siblings to look after… “With let us say a $12000 salary I am pretty sure that part of the refereeing grant from the IRB to the FRU for referees can be utilised to accommodate his salary. ”Vuki said he was concerned about Bolabiu’s financial welfare in the long-term as he had his mother and siblings to look after. “If Bolabiu decides to quit Fiji rugby to pursue a secure financial future outside rugby then it will be a huge investment loss. I am a realist” said Vuki. “You need to consider these aspects. Bolabiu cannot sustain himself purely on his one-off paid international refereeing allowance from the FRU. “That is why the FRU needs to consider this young man’s future and reciprocate his goodwill.

Rawaqa an ideal choice: Tanivula
Fiji Times – Dec 25, 2007
Taniela Rawaqa does his Christmas shopping. NADI rugby coach Iliesa Tanivula says utility Taniela Rawaqa is the ideal replacement for the unavailable William Ryder in the second leg of the International Rugby Board World Sevens Series. Tanivula who coached Rawaqa with the Crusaders dubbed the Vuda man a secret weapon’. “Rawaqa’s kicking prowess and uncanny skills puts him among the front runners for the 12-member team to Wellington and San Diego” Tanivula said. “Rawaqa is an exceptional player with lots to offer. “He was the driving force for Nadi in the local sevens series last year… Training last week was tough. It is not easy to get into the national side. Like every other person in the village my aim was to play sevens rugby for Fiji when I was small. I wanted to go to Hong Kong. When I was selected in the 15-member squad I realised that this dream could come true. However I was named in the non travelling reserve. This made me train harder.

As predictable as taxes
NEWS.com.au – Dec 25, 2007
article-tools –> By Todd Balym December 25 2007 12:00am THE only thing more predictable than footballers behaving badly was that Melbourne Storm would win the 2007 NRL premiership. In a case of a rugby league season imitating life it started with the birth of a new team in the Gold Coast Titans continued with almost routine player scandals before ending with a Storm title nearly everybody predicted prior to the season kick off. Just as taxes and death are life’s only guarantees so too were off-field scandals and a Melbourne victory for the NRL. The Storm rarely ventured from coach Craig Bellamy’s well-chartered course in 2007 and after last year’s grand final heartbreak at the hands of Brisbane the club’s second NRL title never appeared in doubt. Their 34-8 grand final defeat of Manly capped a marvellous season for the Storm Greg Inglis deservedly winning the Clive Churchill medal as six players earned Australian Test selection for the end of year 58-0 mauling of New Zealand. "This is unbelievable five years of hard work has finally paid off” said Storm skipper Cameron Smith… But for every scandal came a breath of fresh air. Just take Israel Folau and Krisnan Inu for example. Putting wholesome fun back into rugby league the devout mormons and close childhood friends Folau and Inu turned the NRL into their own backyards with unbelievable rookie seasons. Folau 19 set a club record for most tries in a season at Melbourne won a premiership was named rookie of the year and earned an Australian Test debut. Inu the 20-year-old grinning assassin debuted for New Zealand after just one NRL game and helped Parramatta reach the preliminary finals. Then there’s second-year star Jarryd Hayne and his unforgettable State of rigin debut for NSW. The confident 19-year-old winger scored the try of the season by chipping around Brent Tate on the halfway line just before halftime in game one only to throw a howler of a pass which gave Queensland victory in the second half.

Local celebs eclipsed by international mega-star
stuff.co.nz – Dec 25, 2007
She said in ctober that she formerly had a drug habit worth $1000 a day. Keita Nobilo of the Nobilo Wines family and ex-girlfriend of former All Black and Kiwi Matthew Ridge is also facing methamphetamine and cannabis charges. Another celeb to fall foul of the law this year was former rugby league star Brent Todd who was sentenced to one year's home detention and 190 hours of community work for fraud relating to gaming machine money. It was the second bad year for Todd who was declared bankrupt in February last year and later fined $500 after admitting procuring cocaine. His fall from grace was complete when it was reported the former high flyer had resorted to washing cars at friend Ridge's carwash business. Speaking of Ridge his relationship with Rebecca Loos – famous for claiming to have had an affair with Beckham – went down the loo this year. But unfortunately not before the pair made British tabloid headlines for getting down to business in business class on an Air New Zealand flight from London to LA… f course by now the buzz is all about who will take part in next year's Dancing With the Stars? Will Richie McCaw team up with rumoured girlfriend Hayley Holt who has previously partnered sportsmen turned dance contestants Brendon Pongia and Danyon Loader on the show?Could dancing take big man Jonah Lomu's mind off his reported recent separation from wife Fiona? And what about newly married Doug Howlett? It's a pity he's headed to Ireland as his fancy footwork would have made him a frontrunner for Dancing With the Stars. Perhaps after his antics in London following the All Blacks' world cup loss he could star in his own spin off version Dancing on Cars. But the less said about rugby the better this year. Fortunately thanks to Beckham's fleeting jaunt down under we had a new sport to focus on and a new hero to worship even if it was just for one night.
