Rugby Union: Review of 2007
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 28, 2007
Team of the Year South Africa. Brilliantly coached in difficult circumstances superbly led by John Smit pragmatic but rarely boring. Worthy and popular world champions who were gracious in victory and are now set on becoming the first nation to successfully defend that crown. Don’t bet against them. Player of the Year Bryan Habana or Juan Martin Hernandez would be the obvious choices but their time will come again – I am opting for Pumas captain Agustin Pichot who bowed out of international rugby with a string of inspiring performances. Rarely if ever has one player had such an effect on his team throughout a 12-year career.

But what should they play lacrosse baseball or soccer? Have you ever heard about or thought of playing rugby? High-school age rugby is on the rise and the game is played throughout the USA culminating in a national championship tournament in late May. Rugby is the ancestor of football and is similar to no-huddle wishbone gridiron game with all two-way players. Forward passing is not allowed so the ball must be advanced by hard running and intricate lateral passing. After a tackle play continues as teams essentially a compacted line of scrimmage try to drive each other off the ball.

Tom French who started the Heineken Cup Final at Twickenham last May in place of the injured Tim Payne starts only his second game of this season again in place of Payne who is rested. French will link up with Phil Vickery who has completed his two week suspension and hooker Joe Ward also returns to the XV. There is further shuffling behind them as George Skivington returns to partner Simon Shaw at lock instead of Richard Birkett and Dan Leo starts in the back row in place of James Haskell who is rested.
