getElementById(”imgGalleryNav”). The Spears were to have become South Africa’s sixth Super 14 rugby franchise with their right to play entrenched for the 2007 and 2008 seasons. However this would have been at the expense of the bottom-placed South African franchise team at the end of 2006 which at the time was the Lions. Despite this agreement by the President’s Council and despite the signing of a Participation Agreement on November 28 2005 the move was blocked. In a statement to this newspaper Tony McKeever the former Spears CE said he believes the sidelining of the Spears was deliberate.

Not the game perhaps but certainly the governing body's ability to eclipse all rivals when it comes to the business of transforming itself into a babbling jabbering public embarrassment. I mean there we were a couple of months ago following another Bracewellian media gaffe in Sydney ready to bet the house on the likelihood of the New Zealand cricket coach ending the year as he started it – as the undisputed champion of the barking mad. Yet only a few weeks later Bracewell now walks the streets with a spring in his step and a sparkle in his eye safe in the knowledge that he now seems a picture of moderation and common-sense in comparison with the serial-bunglers at the NZRL. Seldom in the field of transforming an organisation into an international laughing stock has one group of people ventured so far in the line of duty and particularly those who presided over the fortunes of Kiwis' coach Gary Kemble; the man – who when faced with unsupportive players – opted to resign only weeks after being re-appointed.

All Black boost for ANZ Cup Sunday 27th January 2008 New Zealand’s premier domestic competition the Air New Zealand Cup was given a boost at the weekend with the news that All Black players will be available for their provinces once the Tri-Nations is over. This is in stark contrast to last year when the All Blacks missed the first seven weeks of the Super 14 season because of coach Graham Henry’s much maligned World Cup reconditioning programme and were also withdrawn from the Air New Zealand Cup as part of their World Cup preparation. Following New Zealand’s unexpected early (quarter-final) exit from the World Cup Henry’s plan to withdraw the players from the major competitions has come under fire. This rejection of the plan was heightened by speculation surrounding the schedule for New Zealand’s year-end tour – which is now likely to include games against all four Home Unions – England Wales Scotland and Ireland – giving the All Blacks a chance of winning another ‘Grand Slam’. At the weekend the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) confirmed that All Black players will be available for their provinces for the Air New Zealand Cup.
