Former England captain Martin Corry retires from international rugby

The 34-year-old Leicester flanker has told coach Brian Ashton not to include him when announcing his squad for the Six Nations next week ending an international career that brought him 64 appearances two British and Irish Lions tours and a starting berth in last year's World Cup final defeat to South Africa. “From a purely selfish point of view I am really disappointed that Martin Corry will no longer be featuring in a white shirt” Ashton said. “I know as many others do that he has worn it with pride and dignity for many years. ” Corry made his England debut in 1997 in Argentina but soon struggled to get past the established back row trio of Richard Hill Neil Back and Lawrence Dallaglio for a regular starting spot. ften used as a replacement in the latter stages he was a peripheral member of the squad that won the 2003 World Cup.

"The board will appeal to the International Cricket Council (ICC) to review the decision of the match referee and suspend its operation till the appeal is disposed of" the BCCI said in a statement yesterday. Harbhajan was suspended by the ICC for three tests after being found guilty of racially abusing Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds during the second test in Sydney. Australia won the test by 122 runs in a thrilling finish late on the fifth and final day on Sunday. Harbhajan has denied making a racial slur and the BCCI said the tour would be suspended till his appeal had been heard.

Former France full-back Blanco is the president of France’s Ligue Nationale (LNR) the organisation that oversees the top French clubs which yesterday voted 14 to three in favour of turning its back on Europe’s leading competition. The rebellion has possible for a while with French clubs unhappy about the effect the World Cup – which begins in September – will have on its domestic programme. Matches in the Top 14 France’s domestic league will be played throughout the duration of the 2007 World Cup but the Heineken Cup will only begin when the showpiece finishes. The LNR are also disgruntled about the alleged actions of the RFU whose internal dispute with Premier Rugby Blanco and his cohorts claim is threatening the future of European competition.

Q: What is meant by licensing and why are licences being introduced?A: It is another term for franchises and brings to an end the system of automatic promotion and relegation. From 2009 only clubs who have been awarded a licence will participate in the engage Super League for the next three years. The League say the new system will enable clubs to make long-term decisions and encourage them to invest in junior player production and stadium and training facilities rather than place the short-term emphasis on recruiting established players to avoid dropping out of the elite competition.
