Assistant coach Mark Hammett dismissed the notion that the departure of head coach Robbie Deans (to take up the post of Wallaby coach) will distract the team when the Super 14 gets underway next month. The Crusaders will lose their long-time coach Deans and their most capped flank Reuben Thorne at the end of the season – with Deans taking up a post as head coach in Australia and Thorne moving to Japan to play for club side Yamaha Jubilo. Another possible distraction is the fact that Hammett who played for the franchise from 1998 to 2003 has put his hand as a possible replacement for Deans as head coach next year – with suggestions that he may even play a more prominent role this year. However Hammett said that although Deans had been a huge part of the Crusaders and his – and Thorne’s – departure would obviously add to the side’s motivation the team wouldn’t be focussing on it or any other sideshows.
