The trumpet sound is the beginning of a famous Spanish “paso-doble” paso-doble (two step) being a typical piece of Spanish music played by “wind” instruments (trumpets saxophones etc) and suited to the sound drama and movement of the Spanish bullfight. The words of this paso-doble beginning are: “Toca toca la guitarra Manuel” (Play play the guitar Manuel).

But that’s the reality behind the origins of Auckland’s best-known sporting arena Eden Park. While the stadium became the home of Auckland Cricket in 1910 and Auckland Rugby in 1914 it was not until 1921 the venue hosted its first international rugby game. And it was not a great debut for the ground with the South Africans downing the All Blacks 9-5. Auckland Rugby Union life member Charlie Klink remembers going to his beloved Eden Park as a 12-year-old perched in a tree just outside the ground.
