The Ulster Titans Rugby Football Club founded last year specifically welcomes gay rugby players. But Sports Minister Edwin Poots an evangelical Protestant in the Northern Ireland government accused the team of being bigoted. "I just cannot fathom why people see the necessity to develop an apartheid in sport" Poots told the Northern Ireland Assembly in Belfast. "It would be unacceptable to produce an all-black rugby team or an all-white team or an all-Chinese team.

I am 71 and passionate about the game now but when I was growing up in Italy I don’t remember rugby existing. It’s a relatively modern thing. If I had had the opportunity to play when I was young I would definitely have enjoyed it. But like all Italian boys I was more interested in football.
