But the evidence thus far suggests it is by no means a foregone conclusion that their meeting on March 15 in Cardiff in the final match of the tournament will be a Grand Slam decider. France’s Vincent Clerc has already lit up the tournament with five tries in two matches yet the wing was initially dropped by Lievremont for their game against Ireland.

Malvern maintained their five-point gap at the top of Midlands Two West with a 30-25 win at Cheltenham North. Hereford stay second after winning 15-3 at Barker’s Butts but Bromsgrove’s recent run of success ended in a 38-15 defeat at Stratford. Lucs conceded an early try at Broadstreet but Tom Breakwell went over and Chris James converted to bring the scores level.

The World Cup finalists flew home from Rome on Monday after completing a distinctly unimpressive Italian job. For the second successive Six Nations game England appeared hell-bent on clutching defeat from the jaws of victory. Their second-half implosion against Wales nine days ago when they blew a 13-point lead and lost 26-19 was almost mirrored by events at the Stadio Flaminio. This time a 20-6 interval advantage virtually disappeared against a country who had never beaten England in 13 previous attempts.
