Waratahs attack coach fights to revive NSW rugby

It sounds like the title of a horror movie and considering the B-grade schlock known as NSW’s 2007 season the theme could be easily mistaken for a sequel. But climb out from behind the couch NSW rugby fans. According to the Waratahs the only white-knuckled ride on offer this year will be of the thrilling let’s-do-that-again variety. The Waratahs’ Super 14 season kicks off tonight at the Sydney Football Stadium against the Hurricanes and in terms of openers they don’t come much more important for NSW rugby.

The campaign has been developed in response to the current shortfall in the number of amateur refs in the country. The recruitment drive will be supported by a national awareness and education campaign. Speaking at a media briefing Saturday SA Rugby Referees CE Andre Watson said since 2004 the overall number of amateur rugby referees in South Africa had decreased by 22 percent. He added that the situation was made worse by the fact that not enough new referees were currently coming into the sport.
