Rugby league legend Ashton dies

The Rugby League Hall of Fame member scored 1589 points in 497 appearances for Wigan between 1955-63 and captained the club in six Challenge Cup finals. Ashton was capped 26 times by Great Britain and led the Lions to World Cup victory in 1960 as captain. He later coached St Helens to league and cup glory and was chairman of the 1996 double-winning team. Ashton had been battling prostate cancer for five years and leaves behind wife Doreen and his two children and four grandchildren.

And after extensive research into strength and power development in elite athletes Dr Kilduff will present his findings to more than 100 physiotherapists and sports medicine experts at a conference on April 18 at the Technology in Motion Centre Gwaun Elai Medi Science Campus Llantrisant. Dr Kilduff who has worked on various Welsh Rugby Union and spreys Rugby commissioned research projects said: ?There are many elements to consider when developing the perfect rugby player. ?ver the last few years we have developed a testing battery which allows us to perform a strength diagnosis on individual players. This allows us to identify any weak links in the player?s performance chain with respect to strength and power.

The towering number eight who surely will have been bombarded with more glamorous requests this week managed to find time to attend a rugby festival for children with special needs. It is the fourth year running Jones has joined in the games at Trinity Fields School Ystrad Mynach south Wales and this time he was able to bring along a certain piece of Grand Slam silverware. The Six Nations trophy turned out to rival Jones as the most popular photography subject as he toured with it around the school and onto the pitch where he was mobbed by pupils. As well as signing dozens of autographs and posing for even more pictures with everyone from the head of school Simone Williams to the college students who helped to run the day Jones even joined in a few games and was sent tumbling more than once.

The vote will decide the new path SA Rugby takes and is crucial to the future of the whole organisation. With a maximum 45 votes up for grabs the winner requires a simple majority of 23. And with Western Province the latest union to vote in favour of Stofile this week mandating its three delegates to support the official challenger he is now on the brink of victory. Western Province’s support follows that of several other key unions.
