Palazzolo is a girl but definitely not a girly-girl. Instead the Freeland High School sophomore is one of 21 high school-aged girls breaking down stereotypes this spring as members of the Freeland Barbarians a first-year girls rugby club. For those of you who don’t know rugby is a cross between American football and European soccer. There are rules to this game but from an outsider’s point of view it reminds one of childhood days when you’d gather with your friends and gang tackle whomever had the football in their possession. As one onlooker at Friday’s match in Midland said “This is a lot better than soccer. The rules are simple: someone has the ball and you hit them. Which brings me back to Palazzolo who admittedly enjoys the “hitting” part.

The ARU’s decision on Thursday to go down the private equity route is the most significant development in Australian rugby since the game went professional. For better or worse but in reality probably a bit of both rugby in this country has just been changed forever. And not just rugby. The other codes will be monitoring this week’s development with a growing sense of unease even alarm. Rugby has always had the closest links of any code to the corporate world yet never come close to fully exploiting them.
