English rugby’s coaching setup expected to be overhauled
International Herald Tribune – Apr 15, 2008
The Rugby Football Union board meets at Twickenham on Wednesday to determine the way forward for England and will likely vote on a proposal to make Johnson the team manager — giving him the final say over squad selection and coaching which would seriously undermine Ashton's position. Ashton was reappointed on an indefinite contract in December after England unexpectedly reached the final of the World Cup losing to South Africa. However the team then had a mixed Six Nations campaign with losses to Wales and Scotland and a disappointing game against Italy before it beat Ireland for the first time since 2003. Those inconsistent performances have reportedly prompted the RFU's elite director of rugby Rob Andrew to recruit Johnson who captained England to the 2003 World Cup title.
