GA_googleFillSlot( “AllAfrica_Story_Inset” );Few will be surprised then that the doom and gloom that set in so soon after captain John Smit held the Web Ellis trophy aloft in Paris seems to have dissipated almost as quickly now that the bitter contest for the top job in the South African Rugby Union (Saru) is out of the way. As magnanimous in victory as rival Mike Stofile was bitter in defeat Oregan Hoskins’ actions since retaining his post as Saru president make a refreshing change from the maladministration that has bedeviled the sport in SA for so long. Having committed a few blunders during his first term — remember that embarrassing radio interview when he tried to justify meddling in team selections? — Hoskins now seems genuinely committed not only to avoiding such errors in future but is also seeking to reconcile with Stofile and his supporters on the Saru council. The tone of Stofile’s postelection outburst about SA rugby’s attitude to African administrators was unfortunate but that does not change the fact that the game is still perceived to be unfriendly to blacks.
