stuff.co.nz – May 21, 2008
Air NZ chief executive Rob Fyfe said the airline would have weigh up how much the naming rights impinged on its deal with the NZRU. For the rugby union the issue couldn't come at a worse time. It has just started negotiations with Air NZ to renew its core sponsorship deal which expires at the end of the year. The NZRU is hoping to renew a four-year contract.

Rugby stars add to Smile Week joy
Independent Online – May 21, 2008
Burger and his Super 14 teammates have seen to it that the Smile Foundation’s coffers have received a handsome boost. For every try scored by a South African team during this year’s tournament Vodacom has donated R10 000 to the Smile Foundation an organisation that helps children with facial disfigurements to receive reconstructive surgery. ‘Can you imagine the anguish at not being able to smile?’Vodacom’s Tries for Smiles campaign is lighting up the faces of children who are often ostracised because they look different. Some have congenital disfigurements such as cleft palates.

Rugby league: Ancient kiln stands in St Helens’ way | Sport |…
Guardian – May 21, 2008
uk Wednesday May 21 2008 10. 25 BST St Helens believe that they are a significant step closer to securing their new stadium after receiving unanimous planning permission from their local council last night although they have run into an unlikely complication over an ancient kiln known as Cannington Shaw No7 Bottle Shop. The council have made preservation and restoration of the kiln which is officially designated an ancient monument by English Heritage one of the conditions for their approval of the scheme when the north-west regional planning office considers whether to send it to London for consideration by the central government in the coming months. However Langtree who are Saints’ principal partners in the £25m redevelopment of the town’s derelict United Glass site warned that such conditions “could put the whole financial viability of the scheme at odds with our ability to deliver”. The St Helens chairman Eamonn McManus remains confident that a compromise will be reached. “This is wonderful news for the club its supporters and for the town of St Helens” he said.

Momentum for McKenzie again
NEWS.com.au – May 21, 2008
"There is no doubt now they are looking to sign a coach who is inferior to Ewen – that is the silliness of the whole thing” Jones said. "If you decide to replace a coach you need to have someone better lined up. You just can’t believe that in modern professional rugby a (coaching search) could be so inept. I don’t think they had any idea what they were doing to be quite honest. ” Jones said NSW had it in mind to give the job to McKenzie’s assistant Todd Louden but for whatever reason he decided not to take it. "I know they approached coaches in Europe but they could not tell them when they were actually going to make a decision” Jones said. Jones said the situation at NSW was in stark contrast to the Brumbies who decided not to renew the contract of Laurie Fisher and had Andy Friend ready to go as his replacement… These players may be lost in the future. FIVE REASONS WHY THERE ARE NO ALTERNATIVES: 1. Not one of the top three candidates has Super 14 rugby experience as head coach. Scott Johnson Les Kiss and Chris Hickey have made their names largely as assistant coaches or in club rugby. Top target Scott Johnson is contractually tied to the USA Eagles who say they won’t let him out of their deal.
