Global rugby board approves yearlong tryout of new rules

Starting in August 13 of 23 so-called experimental law variations already tested out will be adopted universally the International Rugby Board said Thursday. The Northern Hemisphere has yet to try the new rules in top-level rugby. The trial “represents an important milestone for the future of the game” the board's chairman Bernard Lapasset said. Many of the changes had “received unanimous approval as they had clearly shown potential to be beneficial to the game” he said.

The Blues’ win keeps the title race alive but Leinster are still set to win it against the Dragons on Saturday. The Cardiff side dominated with tries from Tom James Ben White Xavier Rush Gareth Williams and Gareth Thomas. The Irish province had been aiming to overtake Ulster in the table to gain entry to European rugby’s premier cup. Connacht started well and were 6-0 up thanks to penalties by New Zealand fly-half Troy Nathan.
