Toronto Star – May 8, 2008
The centenary Test was played at the Sydney Cricket Ground where New Zealand edged Australia 11-10 in the first Test match in 1908. The SRU announced the scheme which they hope will ensure players on the fringes of the Glasgow and Edinburgh teams are playing regular competitive rugby. While some players at Glasgow and Edinburgh have previously had ties to Premier One teams the SRU’s new project means all 72 professionals now have second clubs. Many are unlikely to have any playing duties with the clubs to which they are now affiliated including Scotland captain Mike Blair who has been drafted by Edinburgh Accies. However SRU chiefs who have discussed the move with Edinburgh Head Coach Andy Robinson and his Glasgow counterpart Sean Lineen believe the Scottish game can benefit at all levels by creating the link-up.
Rugby: Newby signs with Leicester
New Zealand Herald – May 8, 2008
Newby 28 said it was time for a career change after first playing Super rugby for the Highlanders as a draft player in 2002. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Highlanders and Otago and living in Dunedin but I’m now at a stage where I need to secure my future overseas” he said. Newby transferred from North Harbour to Otago in 2005 making his debut for the province as captain against the touring Lions. He will play his 66th game for the Highlanders at Carisbrook on Saturday when they play the Blues who Newby played seven games for in 2001. Newby made his All Blacks debut against England in Auckland in 2004 and played two more tests – against South Africa in Johannesburg in the same year and Ireland in Auckland in 2006. He is also a former New Zealand sevens representative and was a member of the unbeaten Junior All Blacks side in 2005.

O’Neill has returned from an International Rugby Board meeting in Hong Kong furious that his counterparts in England Ireland and Wales have rejected plans to trial the ELVs. The ARU boss did not rule out the code being played under two different sets of rules if an agreement cannot be reached. “You’d hate to think we’d end up in a situation of two games (but) it could happen” O’Neill said. “The last two weekends we’ve seen the Springboks play the All Blacks in two wonderful Test matches and we’ve seen Australia versus France and Australia versus Ireland and the All Blacks versus England under the old laws.

Mooney guided the Australian Under-19 team to success at the 2006 World Championships and has previously coached many of the Reds players during his stint at the Queensland Academy of Sport. Queensland Rugby chief executive Ken Freer claimed Mooney was the obvious candidate to succeed the outgoing Jones who departed from the franchise just one year into his three-year contract. Freer said: “Phil’s already well known and well respected by the players which will help smooth the transition and give us the continuity and stability we so desperately need after a turbulent year. “The board was unanimous in supporting Phil as the standout candidate for us at this time when we are looking for stability and a long-term commitment to getting the Reds back to where they belong.
