Ireland produced arguably one of their best performances in beating Samoa in Apia during the summer and the Samoan ranks have not been bolstered by the anticipated return of players from Europe. Brian Lima plays in his forth World Cup while captain Semo Sititi Tanner Vili Terry Fanolua and Earl Va’a did return from Britain. The Samoans will struggle at the set piece and will rely on turnovers the by-product of their renowned tackling. Not all the hits will be legal but they’ll be good to watch.

But I feel bound to report on some news put about by three heavyweight scientists. In the past eight years the International Panel on Climate Change has produced a series of "emissions scenarios" trying to calculate the effects of rising carbon emissions. American scientists Roger Pielke and Tom Wigley and Canadian economist Chris Green have analysed successive reports of the panel. Writing in the journal Nature last month they say the panel forecasts fall grossly short of reality seriously underestimate the scale of efforts needed to cut greenhouse-gas emissions and they say current plans to overcome the problem are over- optimistic at best and at worst unachievable.
