Spears rugby franchise fight heads for Parliament

getElementById(“imgGalleryNav”). McKeever the former chief executive of the liquidated Spears franchise which incorporated Border Eastern Province and the South Western Districts rugby unions said he would brief the Parliamentary Sports Committee on the issue prior to its meeting with SA Rugby on June 10. In a letter to Spears liquidator Gary Shrosbree McKeever also warned that because SA Rugby had been “so obstructionist towards seeking a lawful resolution and fair remedy” he planned to petition Sports Minister Makhenkesi Stofile to invoke the Sports Act and appoint a judicial commission of inquiry into what he alleged was the conduct of certain individuals in SA Rugby Pty Ltd “ in multiple violations of the SA Rugby Constitution”. McKeever’s letter came after SA Rugby’s attorneys De Klerk & Van Gend last month objected to Shrosbree that McKeever pretended “to be the authorised representative of the Southern Spears”. Last year the Daily Dispatch was first to report that McKeever had approached Thulani Kunene the manager of the Competition Commission’s enforcement division to investigate his claims that SA Rugby and the five big provinces earlier colluded to bar Spears from taking part in the Currie Cup and Super 14 tournaments.
