The Crusaders gave Deans a fitting send-off on Saturday claiming the Super 14 franchise's seventh Super rugby title with a 20-12 victory over the Waratahs of New South Wales. Deans a stalwart of Canterbury rugby fashioned a Super competition record that is unlikely to be beaten for many years if ever five titles and two lost finals as head coach and two wins as manager. It was also a fond farewell for Reuben Thorne who went on to the field with several minutes remaining ensuring that he had a hand in all seven Super triumphs. The only sour note in the Crusaders' weekend of celebration was Kieran Read being overlooked by the All Blacks selectors yesterday. The man every pundit was picking to be named in the All Blacks was the outstanding player in Saturday night's success completing a memorable campaign.
