A renewed contract announced by Ford New Zealand this month meant All Blacks and Super 14 players would be guaranteed a Ford vehicle only until the end of 2009 The New Zealand Herald said today. A decision would be made then on whether the sponsorship will continue. Ford New Zealand has sponsored the national team and the Super 14 rugby franchises for 15 years. Sponsorship manager Suzanne Van Pels said various circumstances had led to the year-long contract.

Police sources confirmed Thomson had been charged with assaulting a woman the Dominion Post reported today. New Zealand Rugby Union professional rugby manager Neil Sorenson was aware of the incident but said it would be inappropriate to make further comment as it was a police matter. Thomson who plays Super 14 rugby for the Highlanders was on annual leave Highlanders chief executive Richard Reid said adding it was too soon to talk about disciplinary measures. Thomson made his debut for the All Blacks in Wellington this year against Ireland.

The Sunday Star-Times understands Walsh will front an NZRU disciplinary hearing after he allegedly misbehaved at the Sanzar meeting in Sydney two weeks ago. Refereeing sources including the International Rugby Union's boss of referees Paddy 'Brien confirmed they were waiting for the outcome of the hearing. But when approached by the Star-Times at his Auckland home last week Walsh said: "I don't want to comment" while a spokesman for the NZRU said it "never makes public comment on personal employment issues". 'Brien confirmed he had recently appointed Walsh to referee the final and possibly deciding match of the Six Nations between Wales and Ireland.
