Both were great Leicester leaders and mighty men of England. Johnson may have beaten Richards to the England job but there is no way anyone could argue that if the World Cup winning captain is to emulate his own playing achievements he has much to do and much to learn from the career of Richards before those of us sceptical about the appointment of an absolute novice into such a pressurised position are convinced. Scotland callingSo much for an English observation how about a brief thought on Scottish rugby. Have Scotland finally found their fly half? A young man named Ruaridh Jackson made a Heineken Cup debut at Bath on Sunday and the Glasgow man eclipsed Butch James and appeared to the manor born.

Rugby and football more important………..than Eisteddfod

The ruination of Pontcanna Fields has had serious knock-on effects on other venues around the city and it is of no surprise to any footballer that Trelai has had to be taken out of use for at least December due to dangerous pitch conditions that have resulted due to overuse. Heath Park is another venue that is looking the worse for wear. The Eisteddfod has far less relevance to the people of Cardiff than the games of rugby and football that take place on our parklands each weekend. In the end it comes down to a choice: do we have a cultural event such as the Eisteddfod in the city’s boundaries or do we have good quality safe venues for our children to play sport? If the city’s people were only asked I know what the choice of the vast majority would be. DW EvansKing George V Drive Cardiff Keep up to date with the news.

Salary caps don’t work – study
Stuff.co.nz New Zealand
Analytical consultancy Offlode used an algorithm or formula previously used in the corporate world to understand consumer behaviour to measure team performance in 23 major competitions around the world over five years and across nine codes. Central to the findings were that rugby union's competitions rated among the lowest in terms of competitiveness. Rugby's Guinness Premiership Air New Zealand Cup Super 14 and Currie Cup were four of the five most predictable competitions – only New Zealand's National Bank Cup netball the only semi-amateur tournament included rated as less even. And perhaps most surprisingly seven of the eight most-evenly contested competitions did not use a salary cap with the United States' free-spending Major League Baseball heading the list. The paper's author and Offlode's director of analytics Paul Bracewell said publicity about the financial struggles of Air New Zealand Cup teams Northland and Tasman had prompted the research. "We thought is it really fair? So we thought we'd take that angle as well and it added a few more chapters to the paper [we were already working on] and made it a bit more relevant to what's going on in New Zealand rugby.

The team that leaves on Thursday for Port Elizabeth South Africa has however secured the services of former 400m sprinter Justine Bayigga. Namayega was ruled out after picking up an ankle injury in training on Saturday while Mudoola opted out of the trip to concentrate on exams at Law Development Centre. Coach David Mutaka admitted that the absence of Mudoola and Namayega would be felt but said it would give others a chance to play. “Since we are building a team this gives us an opportunity to try other options and also try out players in different positions.
