n a misty and damp afternoon with the ground heavy and muddy the Sports roared out of the blocks to play some classic attacking rugby. The young Penygraig side with 10 youth players from the last two seasons looked alert from the outset but it was the composure and experience of the Sports that showed when Gary Punter scored an early try from the base of the scrum. Nathan Townley added the conversion. Penygraig then put on pressure and seemed to be harshly penalised by the referee much to the annoyance of the home support. During this spell they were unlucky not to score.

Tondu steadied the ship and gradually got into the game and after 15 minutes Dean Thomas kicked a penalty. Two minutes later Nathan Brown broke through two tackles to crossed for a Tondu try and Thomas added the conversion to bring the Pandy Park side level. Both sides played some excellent open rugby and on the half hour Tondu’s Man of the Match Thomas showeda clean pair of heels to the Zebras’ defence and touched down between the posts to make his conversion a formality. Five minutes later he kicked a penalty to put some light between the teams. But back came Treorchy and some powerful forward play saw Daniel Thorn cross the line to make the half time score After the turnaround it was more of the same with both sides throwing the ball around and giving all they had and the Rhondda Valley side were getting ever more desperate as the game went on and threw everything at the Waterwheelers who stood firm to a man. Although there was no score in the second half it was a nail-biting affair. The closeness of the game showed that the regional divisions are well matched Tondu top of Division Three South West and Treorchy undefeated in Division Three South East.

The fly-half 29 had further surgery two weeks ago to determine the success of the initial operation. Falcons director of rugby Steve Bates reported Wilkinson had been cleared for the next stage of his rehabilitation. “That has a timescale all of its own but at least the initial hurdle seems to have been overcome” he said. Wilkinson will now work on strengthening his knee and making sure it has the required flexibility before proceeding further. “There was always going to be a little doubt about whether the original operation had been a success as with all operations” Bates added.

In the second half Matthew James kicked another penalty and further tries were scored by captain and No 8 Lee Beach (2) Matthew James left winger David Evans and lock Neil Edwards.

It was a match full of passion commitment and effort from both sides and it occasionally spilled over into fighting with neither side prepared to give an inch. There were five yellow cards dished out by referee David Williams of Caldicot who hails from Nantyffyllon with the Ravens getting four of them. They spent most of the second half with only 14 men and for five minutes were down to 13 but in the end their extra pace and fitness proved the deciding factor as they ran in four tries in the final quarter. The Ravens had an edge in the scrums while the line outs were fairly evenly contested.
