n the famous ‘cabbage patch’ itself we saw two teams who are likely to grow and thrive in the new year. Leicester are not quite firing of old but show signs of real quality and when they do finally click some very good teams will cop a hiding. Harlequins’ young dashers remain on a steep learning curve and although they occasionally dig holes for themselves they also have the verve and nerve to gloriously win or rescue matches at the death. And when they do precisely that in front of a 50000 holiday crowd at Twickenham the feel-good factor is palpable.

After fellow High Street chains Woolworths MFI and Zavvi went into administration the supermarket giant is bucking the recession by hoping to make its Rugby store more than 50 per cent bigger. The plans for the Dunchurch Road site include adding 25000 sq ft to the 43500 sq ft store and a customer restaurant and cafe on a new first-floor mezzanine. There will be extra parking spaces including more disabled and parent spaces secure cycling bays and better pedestrian links. People can see and comment on the plans during an exhibition at the store between Tuesday January 6 and Sunday January 18 before a formal application is submitted. Players needed for underwater rugby hockey

Tom Elliott 73 years old and the local grand master of the sports of underwater hockey and rugby is working to develop the sport here by generating interest in the game. Brantford is one of three places in North America where underwater rugby is played according to Elliott who’s been at it for more than 30 years. The game involves six players on each side.
