Some of the dresses sparkled incessantly while others resembled vibrant ballerina tutus. But Blythe and her friends were not dressed to attend a high school dance. They were getting ready to play rugby. Blythe and her friends are not only UCLA students but part of the UCLA women?s rugby team. The team was dressed Thursday afternoon for their annual ?Prom Dress Rugby? fundraising game in hopes of raising money for upcoming season fees and to publicize the team. ?The purpose is to get people to know that UCLA has a (women?s) rugby team because it?s amazing that people don?t know that we exist or even how a rugby ball looks like? Yachvili could have eased their worries last weekend but his missed penalty on the final whistle saw them lose 15-14 to fellow relegation battlers Bourgoin so this Saturday’s match away at third from bottom Castres is already a must win clash if they are not to be dragged further into the mire. Biarritz’s veteran French centre Damien Traille admitted that confidence was low but that they were working hard together as a unit to rectify matters. “We must continue to play attacking rugby and it will pay off. It is for us to react and to work on it. We are working together and we are ignoring the critics. “While Yachvili is still in favour that is not the case of another scrum-half former All Black great Justin Marshall who was dropped from Montpellier’s 27-man squad for this weekend’s match with Clermont after refusing to go on as a late replacement in the match against Toulouse. “We will make a decision about his (Marshall’s) future in the coming days” said general manager Denis Navizet ominously.

The 27-year-old Springbok wing is back in the Lions den after a spell at French club Biarritz but there is no talk yet of him pushing for a place in the Springbok squad later this year. Right now all Willemse wants to do is enjoy his rugby and try to become a regular in the Lions’ Super 14 team. The squad reconvened this week after a few weeks’ break and are hard at work preparing for the Super 14 kickoff in just over a month’s time. Willemse who joined the French club following the Boks’ World Cup win in November 2007 says he never expected to be back in the red-and-white of the Lions when he left the union a little more than a year ago. “It was a last-minute decision really to come back” said the Bok winger yesterday. “I missed the sunshine and the people here in South Africa and to be honest I found it really difficult to adjust to life in France.
