The results with just one more round in European club rugby’s premier tournament left to play even raised the prospect of no French club reaching the knock-out stages. “A real failure” blasted French sports daily L’Equipe on its front page. “Threatened with being absent from the European Cup quarter-finals for the first time French rugby is asking itself some painful questions. “Former three-time European champions Toulouse fell to a shock 33-26 home loss to the previously winless Glasgow while Parisian high rollers Stade Francais were humbled 31-17 by an injury-depleted Llanelli side who had not won in the last two years of European competition.

Twenty-four men?s teams and for the first time 16 women?s team will battle it out to be crowned world champions at Dubai’s magnificent new venue ?The Sevens?. The draw was carried out by Bernard Lapasset the Chairman of Rugby World Cup Limited with Her Royal Highness Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein and His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum Chairman and Chief Executive Emirates Airline and Group. Rugby World Cup Sevens 2009 will feature the first ever women?s competition with 16 teams having come through a competitive qualifying process involving 83 nations across the IRB?s six regions.

Benjamin Ayimba’s team will face England whom they beat thrice at last season’s IRB Seven’s Series alongside Tunisia and Hong Kong side in Pool E after the draw was made on Monday. Their main threat in the group remains England who won the tournament in 1993 and have made a terrific start to the season where they sit in the top four of the IRB sevens standings. Tunisia gave Ayimba’s side a scare during the qualification campaign before the second ranked country in Africa at the shorter version of the game while Hong Kong travel as the underdogs. Kenya have a good record against the Asian side.
