Yet while Evans remained earthbound – even after his try was confirmed – there was no doubting that this result turned European rugby on its head. Glasgow the perennial easybeats of the Heineken Cup made a mockery of their lowly status with a performance of passion guile pride and ambition and they could easily and deservedly have won by much more. Toulouse walked off to a chorus of derision from their own fans but you would have sensed the crowd’s new-found respect for the victors as well. The final scoreline might suggest a close contest but Glasgow spent most of the match in the comfort zone of knowing that Toulouse would need at least two converted tries to overcome their lead. The gap closed dramatically in the last few minutes as the French side claimed a penalty try and a touchdown by Vincent Clerc but the clock was against them.

"After a series of incidents involving excess alcohol consumption Cowan cut the booze after he was fronted on the issue by the NZRU and fined for his oafish behaviour. NZ Cricket took a similar approach with Ryder dropping him from a one-dayer and fining him after his drinking session in Wellington.
