Eddie Jones: Marshall ideal deputy as going gets tougher

We lost Michael wen our international No 8 for the rest of the season when an old knee ligament injury flared up and the specialist decided he needed total reconstruction surgery. Then we saw Neil de Kock our influential scrum-half suffer a broken arm. When that sort of thing happens to players performing in the spine of the team a director of rugby has no choice but to move quickly. We have a fair bit of know-how in the back-row department but Neil’s misfortune left us short of cover at No 9 which is such a crucial position especially the way the game is played in England. Fortunately I had an idea that Justin Marshall might be available – it was an open secret that he’d had a falling-out with the coaching team at Montpellier – so now he’s here with us on a contract that takes us through to the end of the season. I’d say it was the quickest piece of business I’ve ever been involved with which is satisfying given the quality of the individual involved. Justin didn’t win 80-odd caps for New Zealand by chance: he was a brilliant operator throughout his long Test career and when I saw him play for Montpellier against Bristol in the autumn it struck me he’d lost none of his authority.

All youth 19 and under from any school in Pierce County are welcome to come out and play. French rugby club in talks with Chabal

“The first contact was made back in December” Racing Metro’s media officer Thomas Lombard told AFP on Friday. He stressed that no concrete negotiations had taken place and added that any move by Chabal would be subject to the club gaining promotion next season to the French Top 14. The 31-year-old Chabal known as ‘the Caveman’ won over a legion of admirers at the 2007 World Cup. He has 42 caps to his name and has played for Sale since 2004.

Johnnie Beattie the capped No8 also returns to the squad but just to the bench with James Eddie retaining his hold on the blindside flanker jersey and Kelly Brown the No8 one. The aim for Beattie and Lineen and Glasgow appears to be the same as it has been for years ? consistency. Expecting that to come in the cash-rich rugby playground of Toulouse is perhaps a bit much but Lineen is not about to lower his demands. “There’s a lot more to be asked of the players and the coaches” he said. “(Last week] was a very frustrating game. It wasn’t until the last few minutes that they realised they could lose it. Going across to Toulouse our first priority is our defence.
