Seven men and seven women were arrested during a series of early morning raids on properties in counties Limerick Tipperary and Dublin in a preplanned operation involving more than 70 gardaí. The majority of the arrests were made in Limerick where a total of 12 people were arrested by gardaí yesterday morning at several addresses on the southside of the city. Five men and five women were arrested at 7am while two more people a man and a woman were arrested at 11am as part of the Garda operation. A 41-year-old man was arrested near Bansha in Co Tipperary while a woman in her 20s was arrested in Coolock Dublin.

The 58-year-old Sheens the most experienced coach in National Rugby League history with 568 games was appointed Tuesday to replace Ricky Stuart whose contract as Australia coach ended after the Kangaroos’ World Cup final loss to New Zealand last November. Stuart decided not to reapply after being sanctioned and fined by the International Rugby League Federation for verbally abusing a World Cup referee and an England official in the team hotel the morning after the final. Sheens got the job ahead of Manly’s NRL premiership winning coach Des Hasler and Mal Meninga who is the most-capped Australian rugby league international of all time and who has guided Queensland to three successive State-of-rigin series wins over New South Wales. Sheens’ first match will be the May 8 Test against New Zealand in Brisbane.

Anderson’s manager Lance Thompson had been in negotiations with Cronulla about a two-year extension to his existing deal which had been due to expire at the end of this season. “There was no way we could match the money being offered to Fraser and while disappointed to be losing a player of his ability we have decided to allow him to accept this opportunity” Sharks chief executive Tony Zappia said. With the start of the Japanese pre-season still some months away Anderson asked the Sharks if he could stay on at the club until his departure.

Saulala chaired the union until his four-year term expired after the 2007 Rugby World Cup. After a period outside of the role he was re-elected this month with the support of most Tongan clubs.
