Women’s rugby participates in ‘March Madness’
USD Volante nline
The squad won three games Saturday. While many women from the USD club rugby team joined their fellow students last weekend to participate in Dance Marathon a few Coyotes didn’t let a lack of numbers stop them from competing in one of the largest rugby tournaments in the Midwest. Six USD women joined forces with a newly-formed team from Augustana College and made it all the way to the semifinals of the 8th Annual March Madness Rugby Tournament hosted by Wayne State College. USD was one of 20 women’s squads at the event which included teams from Wisconsin Colorado Kansas and even Canada. USD women’s coach Bryn Chivers said the combination of six USD players and 13 players from Augustana proved to be an interesting but successful mix. “The Augustana girls who were all really new to the game had some players who had some speed and had a lot of energy” Chivers said.

"The first year we got out here and just started to bang heads just run until they got tackled. But the more they watched the more they learned and they start to pick it up and it’s been a pleasure to coach. "Gilbert took the Cup from last year’s winner Spring Valley and did it by beating the Vikings in simple fundamental rugby. "We wanted to recycle the ball quick and get the ball out to our backs" Frontz said. "We’ve got a big inside and our wings are very quick. ""We started to kick and they never really backed up and covered so we did that for a while" he added. It was those kicks that blew the game open and pinned the Vikings inside their own half for the entire first half.
