ARU chief executive John ‘Neill has already flagged that Australia’s fifth Super rugby team will be operated under a different ownership model to the existing sides – the Brumbies Western Force Queensland Reds and New South Wales Waratahs which are run by the traditional owners the state and territory unions. The expansion team is likely to be the first Australian Super rugby franchise in the true sense of the word operated by private enterprise in the same way that a small businessman runs a Bakers Delight outlet. If it is successful it has the potential to change completely the Australian Super rugby landscape. Franchising is one of the only ways to access investment capital without giving up control of the business.

A Brisbane District Court jury on Wednesday found Magid Santino Agwaig 25 of Acacia Ridge Marier Majur Amour 22 of Carseldine and Hakuma Martin Mirich Teny 25 of Acacia Ridge not guilty of common assault grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning bodily harm. A fourth man Doctor Martin Mirich Teny 21 had charges against him dropped during the trial after there was found to be insufficient evidence. The Brisbane trio was jubilant as they emerged from court at the end of the week-long trial. They had been accused of attacking Souths Rugby Union Football Club’s general manager Donald Godfrey as well as two off-duty police officers David Eugarde and Inspector Steve Munro – the club president – at Yeronga in late 2007.

Wales coach McBryde awards two new caps for rugby game against Canada

Fullback Daniel Evans and outside centre Jonathan Davies will make their debuts at Toronto’s York University against a Canadian side that is coming off a 25-6 loss to Ireland last Saturday. Three other players could make their debut for Wales – back row Sam Warburton centre Jonathan Spratt and prop Craig Mitchell – who are all named as replacements in McBryde’s first team selection. “Both Daniel and Jonathan have earned the right to wear the jersey and now have the chance they’ve been waiting for” McBryde said in a release. Canada played well for a good chunk of last weekend’s match before a game-turning scoring play the other way put Ireland in the lead for good.
