For while Robinson’s abilities have brought ringing endorsements from almost every player who has ever worked under him his passionate heart-on-sleeve fervour for rugby has tended to stoke the suspicion that he lacks the icy objectiveness a top coach sometimes needs. Brian Moore once described him as a good coach but a “terrible selector” – an opinion that only reinforces the caricature of Robinson as someone who is at his best on the training pitch. It is wise to remember that in his last stint in Test rugby with England he was as disastrous as Sir Clive Woodward’s successor as he had been gloriously successful as his assistant. The SRU press release confirming his appointment trumpeted the fact that England won 41 of their 50 games when Robinson was Woodward’s sidekick; curiously it overlooked the fact that they then lost 13 of their 22 matches with Robinson in sole command. f course an abundance of other factors conspired against Robinson at that time. The England team who had won the World Cup the year before his appointment were disintegrating senior players were either injured retired or horribly short of form Guinness Premiership clubs were in uproar and Robinson enjoyed a level of support from his RFU employers that was akin to a knife between his shoulder blades.
